Elm Sun were approached by clients with a vision to open up the rear extension in their home and create a wow-factor kitchen and living space. A large open feeling for the area was required with plenty of light. This huge opening up of the back of the house was to express their love of cooking and entertaining and be a central focus for thier new home. Elm Sun took on the project full steam ahead working very closely with the clients who still resided in the house.
Roof windows in the roof design brought in extra light.
Two rooms and a dated kitchen was the starting point. With a structural engineer involved Elm Sun undertook abit of demolition work and fitted a new 5m structural steel beam along with new timber roof struts to clear out the existing ceiling and open up the space. Incorporating Velux roof windows in the new roof design brought in extra light into the kitchen.
A full rewire for the back of the house was required. Some amendments to the heating system to allow for new locations of radiators along with a heavily insulated ceiling space will keep the new open area warm in winter too. Boarding and skimming in just the right way to create a nice feature to the vaulted ceiling and tie in to the existing lower walls was essential to have the right eyes and arms on the project to ensure this happened.

Plaster drying time is always a waiting game trying to keep productive, in this case Elm Sun patched back up the outside brickwork where the steel was fed in throughthe external wall and undertook some other roof repairs for the client. Then came the fitting of the kitchen around an old brick/iron oven turned wine rack. This was deigned and fitted perfectly, incorporating the old with the new and brought focus back down to the ground level.
Second fix electrics and plumbing were undertaken before any decoration, tiling and flooring were started. Tieing the new kitchen in with the living room as one space required fine attention to detail in decoration and ensuring the base for the flooring was smooth, level and strong. With a granite & quartz specialist fitting the worktops the vision came together.
